What is Platelet Rich Plasma?

PRP is an autologous product that is manufactured by centrifugation from patients’ own venous blood, limiting the potential risk of disease transmission. It has various growth factors that enhance the regenerative capacity of various tissues in the body especially hair.

The main growth factors are platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF), transforming growth factor (TGF)-b1 and TGF-b2, vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), basic fibroblastic growth factor , epidemic growth factor, insulin like growth factors (IGF-1, IGF-2, and IGF-3), and hepatocyte growth factor (HGF). Also CD34 cells in addition to leukocytes due to their angiogenic properties help in hair rejuvenation.

How does it help my situation?

Utility of Prp in the treatment of androgenic alopecia is rooted in the presence of growth factors in plasma factors that are important for cell proliferation and differentiation and has anti-inflammatory properties. The mechanism via which PRP is proposed to stimulate your hair growth through the promotion of vascularization and angiogenesis as well as the entry and extension of the duration of the anagen phase of your hair cycle. Not only Hairfall the regenerative properties of Prp have also been noted in the following:

  • Facial rejuvenation as an adjunct to Botox, fillers and fat to combat wrinkles and facial irregularities.
  • Facial Prp (Vampire Facelift)
  • Stretch marks are treated with Prp and Radiofrequency which utilizes unique property of Prp for regeneration of ablated elastin fibres.
  • As an adjunct to the Hair transplant procedures.
  • Acute and chronic wounds.
  • Acute and chronic burn wounds.
  • Early Osteoarthritis and plantar Fascitis.
  • Genital rejuvenation.

How is it given?

The prepared Prp is injected into your scalp at the level of Hair follicles (0.05-0.1 ml per square centimeter). We at Essence inject the Prp under a Supraorbital block or a field block which makes the procedure almost PAINLESS. We are also using special and very fine 30 Guage needles for injection which reduces pain and trauma to your scalp.

Also you may require multiple sittings 3-4 weeks apart for the effects to show. The number of sittings vary from case to case. To know the number of sittings required contact here.

Why Choose Essence for PRP?

We at Essence strive to give you the best, authentic and most effective hair rejuvenation. We are using a 2 spin method instead of a single spin method used by most centres. The advantage of this 2 spin method is a more efficient and high yield of platelets for the procedure.  The process is carried out under strict aseptic conditions as well as optimum temperature regulations i.e., 20-22°C.  In order to inhibit platelet aggregation, it is prepared with an anticoagulant, commonly using anticoagulant citrate dextrose solution formula A (ACD-A)  at our centre (other centres use EDTA which hampers Prp action).  The centrifugation process separates blood components owing to their different specific gravities, i.e., RBCs being the heaviest, followed by WBCs, whereas platelets are the lightest. The first centrifugation is slow to avoid spinning down platelets and to isolate plasma. Platelets are mostly concentrated right on top of the buffy coat layer. Subsequent centrifugation is faster, so that platelets are spun down and separate as a pellet at the bottom of the tube from platelet-poor plasma. This is a very effective way of making Prp and at ESSENCE we use our own standardized protocol for processing Prp.

We maintain Strict standards to make sure that you receive a quality product for you hairfall treatment. Many centres use commercial devices to prepare Prp like Smart Prep (Harvest technologies) for making Prp but their application has been confusing because each technique leads to a different product with potentially dissimilar biology and unknown relative efficacy. In the section below, various devices and kits have been classified according to the product formed. Although time saving, these adapted kits can be quite expensive as compared to the manual process. Also, commercial interests tend to obscure the true clinical benefits of various platelet concentrates.

We donot recommend commercial kits but if you insist Smart prep by harvest technology it is available for Prp processing at our centre. To book your Prp processing click here

Is it effective?

The effectiveness of the procedure has been published in numerous metanalysis and are available on PubMed for reading. For a list of metanalysis articles on effectiveness of PRP

Are there any side effects to the therapy?

As of now the current approved therapy options include oral finasteride and topical minoxidil. Both are limited in that finasteride is not approved for use in women and is associated with undesirable side effects while use of minoxidil requires a long-lasting commitment to daily applications.

Prp however is made of autologous tissue and is devoid of major side effects.  Adverse reactions with PRP are uncommon. Sometimes patients complain of a burning sensation for a brief time and localized erythema. The mitogenic effects of PRP are only limited to augmentation of the normal healing process and is theoretically not mutagenic.

Although heaviness of head after the procedure may be complained by certain patients. this improves over a 48 hour period. Rare instances of facial swelling due to gravitation of fluid down in the face may occur, Again this is a known complication which improves by 72 hours.
